How to Actually Stick to a Reading Habit
Everyone wants to read more. Very few people actually do it consistently. The gap between intention and action is almost always about setup, not willpower — you do not need more motivation, you need fewer barriers between you and the book.
Make It the Default Option
The biggest reading habit shift for me was leaving a book on my pillow every morning. When I get into bed at night, the book is already there. I do not have to go looking for it, I do not have to choose which book, I do not have to charge anything. It is just there. I read for at least twenty minutes before sleeping almost every night now.
Stop Finishing Books You Do Not Enjoy
The sunk cost fallacy kills reading habits. If a book is not working for you at the 50-page mark, give yourself permission to stop. Life is too short for books you are forcing yourself through, and every book you abandon out of obligation is time you could spend on one you love. Reading should be a pleasure, not a chore.
Read What You Actually Enjoy
This sounds obvious, but many people read what they feel they should read rather than what they actually want to. Thrillers, romance, fantasy, graphic novels — all of it counts. All of it builds the habit. Start with what you love, and your taste will naturally broaden from there.
