The Simple Skincare Routine That Transformed My Skin

I spent years with a twelve-step skincare routine that left my skin red, reactive, and confused. The more products I added, the worse things got. It was only when I stripped everything back to four basic steps that my skin finally started behaving.

The Four Steps I Actually Use

Cleanse. A gentle, fragrance-free cleanser morning and night. Nothing foaming or stripping. The goal at this stage is to remove dirt and sunscreen, not to “deep clean” your pores — that concept is largely a marketing invention.

Treat. One active ingredient at a time. I use a vitamin C serum in the morning for brightening and an AHA exfoliant two or three nights a week for texture. Not every product, every day. Just one targeted treatment when it makes sense.

Moisturise. A simple, unfragranced moisturiser. Your skin needs hydration — this step is non-negotiable even if you have oily skin. Dehydrated skin actually produces more oil to compensate for the lack of moisture.

SPF. Every single morning, rain or shine, indoors or out. This is the single most effective anti-ageing step in any routine. Everything else is secondary.

What I Cut Out

I removed serums I was using just because they were popular, toners that were mostly alcohol, and eye creams that were doing nothing my regular moisturiser was not already doing. The result was clearer skin, a simpler routine, and a much smaller bathroom shelf.
